Britain’s top engineers are trying to warn construction companies of the damage done to the environment by demolishing buildings.
According to research, making steel and brick creates massive amounts of CO2, while cement alone accounts for 8% of global emissions. Some of the country’s top engineers have urged those in the construction world to use recycled materials wherever possible and have suggested that a ‘new way of thinking’ may be needed before planning the construction of new homes.
One author of the report, Prof Rebecca Lunn, said: “Our biggest failure is that we build buildings, then we knock them down and throw them away. We must stop doing this.”
