New statistics indicate the beginning of a post-pandemic recovery for the housebuilding market. Between 1st April 2021 and 31st March 2022, housing programmes delivered by Homes England resulted in 38,436 new houses being started on site while 37,164 new homes were completed over the same period.
In one of the first signs of recovery after the pandemic, the proportion of affordable homes started and completed were both higher than the previous year. 72% of starts (27,509) were for affordable new-build homes – a decrease of 2% on the previous year, but an expected one following the closure of bidding for the Shared Ownership and Affordable Homes Programme (SOAHP). 26,485 (71%) of completions were for affordable homes – an 11% increase from the corresponding period between April 2020 and March 2021.
