Following Liz Truss’ induction into number 10, Simon Clarke has been given the role of Housing Secretary – taking over from Greg Clark. Teesside MP Mr Clarke joins the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) from the role of chief secretary at the Treasury.
Mr Clarke, who won his seat in the 2017 general election, became the youngest cabinet minister in government in September 2021 after being appointed chief secretary to the Treasury. The new secretary has been a vocal supporter of the new build industry – tweeting in May that it would be a “disaster” for the conservatives if they “do not build the homes we need, where we need them”.
