Over 124k New Homes proposed in 2024

The UK’s housebuilding sector is headed into 2024 with 124,000 new homes proposed, as indicated by data from Glenigan.

Notably, the private sector spearheads this surge, contributing significantly with 112,870 new homes detailed in planning applications. Leading the charge, Barratt has unveiled ambitious plans for the largest number of new homes, with a 2024 pipeline of 12,461 units.

Other major players such as Persimmon, Bellway, and Taylor Wimpey are poised to make substantial contributions in 2024, with 10,791, 7,716, and 6,673 homes respectively submitted in planning applications.

A notable trend is the industry’s increased focus on building houses, accounting for 89% of new homes in the planning system in 2023, up from 87% the previous year. Conversely, the proportion of flats has receded to 9%, down from 11% in 2022.

Housing associations and registered social landlords are actively participating, submitting detailed planning applications for 15,612 homes in 2024. Clarion Housing stands out, proposing the largest number of new homes with detailed plans for 2,909 units.

With a robust pipeline of projects from both private and public sectors, the residential sector promises continued opportunities for the construction industry throughout 2024.
